Abstract
This study explores how regular interaction with AI-powered chatbots influences users’ everyday language style. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research involved 24 participants and collected data through text-based conversations, semi-structured interviews, and written documents such as emails and academic assignments. The findings identified five main categories of stylistic adaptation: reduced syntactic ambiguity, simplified lexical choices, polite command structures, structured metacommunicative strategies, and explicit context delivery. Additionally, two extended effects emerged, increased linguistic consistency and enhanced clarity, which also appeared in non-chatbot communication contexts. These patterns were analyzed through the frameworks of Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), Digital CAT (Gasiorek & Giles, 2015), and Language Style Theory, revealing that users tend to adjust their communication styles to align with the perceived limitations of AI systems. The study concludes that interactions with AI not only prompt immediate linguistic adaptation but also shape long-term communicative habits. A distinct "AI-directed register" has emerged, marked by structured, explicit, and context-aware language use. Moreover, frequent chatbot use fosters metalinguistic awareness and strategic communication skills, enhancing users’ effectiveness in academic and professional settings. These results suggest that AI chatbots function not only as assistive tools but also as subtle agents of change in human communication behavior.
