Abstract

Greek mythology is a collection of myths and legends originating from Ancient Greece. These myths explain the origins of the world, the lives of gods and heroes, as well as various important events in the history and culture of Ancient Greece. This study aims to analyze Greek mythology on the development of the main character in the novel Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The main focus of this study is to analyze how Greek mythology affects the development of Percy Jackson’s character as the protagonist. Using a descriptive analytical approach and qualitative method, this study explores narrative elements such as dialogue, description, and actions that show changes in Percy Jackson’s characteristics. The objective theory by M.H. Abrams serves as the theoretical foundation to analyze the portrayal of Percy Jackson’s character. This study finds that the use of Greek mythology in the novel not only makes the story more interesting but also greatly influences who Percy Jackson is as the main character. Gods, mythical creatures, and the adventures that Percy experiences shape his personality, goals, and journey in the story. All these mythological elements provide the basis for Percy’s character development and reflect the values, challenges, and changes he faces.
