Abstract

This research aims to find out the politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson's theory of politeness strategies used by candidates for the 2024 Indonesian Vice Presidential debate. The subject of this research is the 2024 Indonesian vice presidential debate candidates consisting of three candidates. The three candidates for the 2024 Indonesian vice presidential debate are Muhaimin Iskandar candidate number 1, Gibran Rakabuming Raka candidate number 2, and Mahfud MD candidate number 3. The objectives of this study are: 1) to determine the Politeness Strategies employed by the 2024 Vice-Presidential candidates for Indonesia, and 2) to determine which kind of Politeness Strategy is the most dominant in the 2024 Vice-Presidential candidates for Indonesia. This study uses qualitative research techniques, while the main theory uses the theory of Politeness Strategies. The results of this study found that the politeness strategies used by the vice presidents in the 2024 debate were 33 sub-types: Bald on Record found 2 subtypes, Positive Politeness 13 sub-types, Negative Politeness 9 sub-types, and Off Records 9 sub-types. The percentage of data found on Politeness Strategies from the 2024 Indonesian Vice Presidential debate include Bald on Record 7 data (5.15%), Positive Politeness 68 data (50%), Negative Politeness 44 data (32.35%), and Off Record 17 data (12.5%). From these findings, the most dominant politeness strategy used is positive politeness with a frequency of 50%.
