Abstract
Bantul Regency boasts a vibrant creative industry ecosystem and is striving to become a member of the World Creative Cities Network. However, its primary facility, the Gabusan Art Market (PSG), has fallen short of expectations as a promotional hub. This shortcoming is due to its difficult-to-access location, suboptimal management, and an unsuitable market concept, which have led to the neglect of many facilities and unmet revenue targets. Therefore, a new Creative Space, strategically located on Parangtritis Street, a major tourism corridor, is needed to capture the large influx of tourists from downtown Yogyakarta. The design aims to establish a Creative Space that functions as an aggregator and hub for all tourist villages and creative economy players in Bantul. Unlike its competitors, this project positions itself as a curator, showcasing “The Best of Bantul” in one integrated location to alleviate tourists’ confusion caused by numerous destination options. In addition to serving as a business incubator that provides premium market access for industry players, this facility will also act as a gateway, inspiring tourists to explore the potential of tourist villages in greater depth. The design approach applied is Responsive Environment Architecture, based on Ian Bentley's theory, which emphasizes seven design qualities: permeability, variety, legibility, robustness, richness, visual appropriateness, and personalization. The design method involved site analysis, user behavior analysis, and the synthesis of primary and secondary data to develop an adaptive spatial concept. The resulting design is a Creative Space concept that integrates the building with its surroundings through permeable massing and circulation, and provides flexible (robust) spaces for activities such as workshops, art exhibitions, and multipurpose events. This approach aims to create a communicative environment that is responsive to the local sociocultural context while catalyzing creative economic growth in Bantul Regency
