Abstract

In the paper, the writer would like to analyze the patterns and meanings of suffix –ful in the novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling. The writer tries to tell other people the right application of suffix –ful in some sentences found in the novel. Furthermore, the study will dig more about the usage of affixation in contextual meaning especially about the suffix –ful and its function in some words based on the novel. The writer will explain the suffix by using morphology theory from Szymanek and affixation theory from Khalida The writer uses the qualitative research to explain some elements of the use of a language in detail. The writer also uses the wholistic approach in the research. The wholistic approach consists of genetive and objective. Genetive means the history or etymology of suffix –ful from the past is explained. Objective means the patterns and meanings of suffix –ful are presented. It will make the analysis more complete. The writer gets five patterns and four meanings of the research of suffix –ful from the novel. Pattern one is a root combined with suffix –ful. Pattern two is a root combined with suffix –ful and suffix –ly. Pattern three is a root combined with prefix un- and suffix –ful. Pattern four is a root combined with prefix dis- and suffix –ful . Pattern five is a root combined with suffix –ful and suffix –ness. The four meanings of suffix –ful from the research are full of, having, tending to and a container.
