Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze feminine beauty in Jane Austen’ Pride and Prejudice and Marah Rusli’s Sitti Nurbaya. There are three problems analyzed in this study: (1) how different countries and cultures define feminine beauty; (2) the features that are considered beauty on a woman; (3) the way how feminine beauty is constructed socially. The writer uses Feminism theory to analyze the feminine beauty of Elizabeth Bennet and Sitti Nurbaya. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method which focuses on the analysis of textual data. The data were collected by reading both novels repeatedly, reading some references related to the theory, taking note of important data, arranging the data, writing down the important data, and drawing the conclusion. The analysis of this research results in some finding. The writer finds how different countries and cultures define feminine beauty specifically in English culture and Indonesian culture; English culture tends to have pointed nose, round eyes, and full lips along with slim, tall, and well-toned body. Meanwhile, Indonesian culture tends to have silky hair, round eyes, and thin lips along with slim and natural toned skin. Then, the features that considered beautiful on a woman are face shape, body shape, and skin color. Moreover, the way feminine beauty is constructed socially in both novels by the family, the local environment, and the general public.
