Abstract

Language is an important factor in communication. Human rely heavily on language to interact to each other, and share their opinions to each other. Politeness is indispensable in terms of communication. Politeness is a rule of life arising from a group's association. The norm of politeness is relative, it means what considered a norm of politeness differs in various places, wards, or times. Being polite is not easy, not just having to master the language, but understanding the interlocutor is very important. It makes the person we are talking to is comfortable, as a speaker, we must understand some strategies of politeness. In this thesis, the writer is interested to examine about spoken language especially the conversation on television shows that have already been uploaded to YouTube. As for the study is Najwa Shihab's speech to her guest in a talk show called Mata Najwa in the episode Para Inspirasi: Jendi Pangabean (Aquaman Penakluk Asia). The writer analyzes about the politeness strategy used by the presenter in interviewing the guest. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach and uses the Brown and Levinson theory. This thesis data collected through the process of collecting the data, watching the video, writing transcription and grouping. Three methods of Miles and Huberman (1994) are used to analyze the data. The results showed that in Mata Najwa dialogue, the presenter used 5 utterances using Positive Politeness, and 1 utterance using Negative Politeness.
