Abstract

This research analyzes the idiomatic expressions in The House with a Clock in its Walls movie by Eli Roth. Idiom is one of the non-literal languages that cannot be translated word by word. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the types of idioms and to describe the meaning of idioms found the movie. The collected data of this study were identify through descriptive qualitative method. The qualitative analysis was used to explain the quantitative results of the analysis then discuss how an idiomatic expression belonged to a certain type of idiom and to evaluate the meaning of the idiomatic expression. The English idiomatic expressions found in The House with a Clock in its Walls were divided into the following six types of idiomatic expressions based on Adam Makkai (1972). There were 116 idiomatic expressions in the movie which are included to six types, those are 55 Phrasal Verb Idiom, 22 Tourneur Idiom, 18 Incorporating Verb Idiom, 16 Phrasal Compound Idiom, 4 Irreversible Binomial Idiom, and 1 Pseudo Idiom. Therefore, Phrasal Verb Iidom is the most common type of idiomatic expressioms that found in this research. The next result is the 9 types of meaning by Pateda (1991)), the researcher found 5 types of meaning 116 idiomatic expressions which are 51 conceptual meaning, 27 denotative meaning, 26 connotative meaning, 10 transferred meaning and 2 narrowed meaning. The conceptual meaning dominates the result of the types of meaning’s classification. It can be concluded that the domination of the types of meaning is the conceptual meaning.
