Abstract

The study entitled “An Analysis of Suffix –ly found in Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland Novel by Lewis Carroll”. The main purpose of this study is to find out the patterns of suffix –ly and find out the most dominant pattern of suffix –ly in the novel Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The writer analyzed suffix –ly by Aristophanes’s theory. There are two problems analyzed in this study, first is the difference between the words with or without suffix –ly and the second is the most dominant pattern of suffix –ly. The method of this study that the writer uses is qualitative. The writer uses qualitative method because the data are not analyzed by statistical, and calculation procedures. The data collecting technique are in the forms of reading the novel to find out the suffix –ly in the novel, taking notes, and analyzing the data. The data analysis technique are the forms of choosing, classifying, and coding. The result shows there are 114 data of suffix –ly. From the first question, the writer found four patterns of suffix –ly namely adjective + suffix –ly = adverb (86%), noun + suffix –ly = adverb (7%), noun + suffix –ly = adjective 3%, and the last one is transitive verb + suffix –ly = adverb (4%). From the second question, the writer found the most dominant pattern of suffix –ly that found in Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll which is adjective + suffix –ly = adverb (86%) Keywords: Alice’s adventure in wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Suffix –ly, Morpheme.
