Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze social conditions of the working class during the industrial revolution in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. There are three problems analyzed in this study. The first problem is how are the social conditions of working class in the real life during the Industrial Revolution. The second is how is the life of the working class reflected in the nove., The third is how are social class differences between the upper class and the lower class reflected in the novel and real life. In conducting this research, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. She approaches the data with Abrams theories, Objective Theory, Mimetic Theory, and Marxist by Karl Marx. There are several things found in this thesis. The writer finds conditions of the working class in the novel which is represented by Bob Cratchit, who is treated poorly by his employer whose named Ebenezer Scrooge. Living conditions is worst, the working class lives in the slums, lives cramped in a small house, and shares private facilities. Working conditions of working class are harsh and dangerous. Many of them work in factories, mines and spinning mills. The women were also forced to work to help running household, although they earn low salary. The difference in social class between upper class and lower class is clearly seen in the novel. The upper class is represented by Ebenezer Scrooge. He is a miser, squeezer, and hoarder of wealth. The lower class is represented by Bob Cratchit, he is a poor clerk, and treated badly by Scrooge. Bob is only paid fifteen shillings a week, and does not give a Christmas holiday. In the real life the upper class oppresses the lower classes, the upper class is also snob, consumptive, and materialistic. The lower classes are poor and lack education and oppressed by the upper.
