Abstract

This Research is aimed to find out whether teaching speaking by using Role Play is effective or not. This is an action research. It is done based on Kemmis and MrTaggart design. The research is conducted in three meetings containing four steps, namely planning, observation, action, and reflection. The subject of the research was the XI Grade students of SMK Dirgantara Putra Bangsa Yogyakarta, Central Java consisting of 32 students. The instruments are pre-test, post-test of speaking test, observation, and interview. The finding of the research indicates the positive direct impact of using Role Play Technique which is shown by students’ grades in the test. The students have positive response to the implementation of Role Play Technique in teaching speaking. It can improve the students’ speaking skill. The improvement can be seen from the comparison of the students score in the pre-test and post-test. The students’ pre-test mean score is 64.13. The mean score of post-test is 71.25 and the mean score of post-test 2 become 76.38. It means that teaching speaking by using Role Play is successful. The atmosphere of the classroom becomes conductive. The students are more active, and brave enough to speak up. Most of the students pay attention to the researchers’ explanation and can play the Role Play well. Key words: improving, speaking, teaching speaking, role play technique.
