Abstract

The riverbanks area in Sleman District, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia that was previously green areas now has started to move towards built environment. This condition can lead to disruption of the function of the river and will damage the river ecosystem. In the long term, the river damage could increase the threat risk to the community in general. Therefore, the efforts of controlling in utilization and management of the riverbanks are an activity that must begin immediately. First is required identification and management of space in the riverbanks. This paper describes some typology of utilization and management of riverbank human settlement in Yogyakarta. This invention is expected to give a model of how the space utilization and management effort in the riverbanks that have occurred in some rivers in Indonesia. Until now, river management initiatives continued to grow, and even come from outside the region concerned. Riverbank residents who have access to knowledge and support from outside to try also to develop various activities associated with river management more accountable. In neighborhoods with a society that could manage its own needs (community management), opens an opportunity to grow the power of innovation and creativity of society to utilize its resources toward a harmonious life, good social life, economic growth and a healthy housing environment, productive, and sustainable.
