Abstract

This research entitled An Analysis of Australian Slang Found in How to Talk Australians Mini-series is intended to indentify the types of Australian slang and to describe the meaning of slang in the mini-series. This research is a qualitative research because it produces descriptive data in a written form and it does not use any statistical procedure. The writer used documentation method of collecting data because the data were taken from a mini-series from YouTube. She collected by watching How to Talk Australians mini-series then wrote the transcript of Australian slang words found in the mini-series. After the data were collected, the writer classified the data into some types of slang and also evaluated the meaning of the Australian slang word. The last step of collecting data is coding technique to make the data easier to be recognised. The writer analysed data by data reduction, data display, and conclusion. She focused on Australian slang. She collected the data in a note and then put the data into a table to answer the question in the problem formulation. The last is she drew the conclusion. The results show that Australian slang found in How to Talk Australians mini-series belong to four types of slang based on Eric Partridge’s idea (2004). There are 87 Australian slang words found in the mini-series. There are 22 public house slangs, 29 society slangs, 31 cockney slangs and 5 workmen’s slangs. In this study, cockney slang is the most dominant slang found in the mini-series. There are 2 types of meaning based on Nida and Taber (1982) found in this study. From 87 items, they are 40 referential meaning of slang and 47 connotative meaning of slang. The meanings of slang found in How to Talk Australian mini-series was taken from slang dictionaries and also by evaluating how the slang words were used during specific settings or situations that occurred in the mini-series. The meaning of each slang depends on the context and the situation when the slang appears in the conversation. Slang word which has inappropriate or negative connotation in English does not mean that it has a bad contextual meaning in the society.
