Abstract

The use of electric power can be influenced by the broad type of load used. Loads have resistive, inductive, and capacitive properties, which have an impact on the electrical power factor. The higher active power factor used, the electrical system will work better and vice versa. Therefore, when the system has a massive reactive power or small active power, it will affect the fuel consumption of the generator. The KM Camara Nusantara 5 electricity system has a low power factor. Therefore, the capacitors are needed to improve the power factor. This research was conducted by simulating the installation of bank capacitors by using individual compensation and global compensation methods. This analysis examined electrical energy consumption and fuel cost savings for power plants in KM Camara Nusantara 5 boat. Data analysis was conducted by calculating the value of bank capacitors and conducting simulation using the ETAP (Electrical Transient Analysis Program) software program. The results of the study on the efficiency of electricity consumption showed that after an improvement in the system power factor using a bank capacitor of 80 kVar size on MSB and ESB buses for proper compensation method and 80 kVar on the bus generator for the global compensation method, the power quality of the electrical system enhanced. The power factor in the particular compensation method was 0.95, while the global compensation method was 0.96. The amount of system power losses can be reduced because the total current in the system decreased. In the condition of the peak, the energy load consumed before the improvement of the power factor was 2193 kWh. After the improvement of the power factor, the energy consumed was reduced to 598.7 kWh by the particular compensation method, while the global compensation method for consuming energy was 631,584 Kwh. KM Camara Nusantara 5 saved from Rp 2,974,058.00 to Rp 2,162,126.00 with the particular compensation method, while with the global compensation method, it became Rp 2,117,982.00. Power factor improvement was implemented with the assumption that the load used was fixed. Keywords: Power Factor, Capacitors, Fuel Costs for Power Plants
