Abstract

Most Indonesians are farmers. The principles that underlie the community to farm are; most of land in Indonesia are rice fields, besides the demand for rice staples is increasing. When accelerating the time of planting and harvesting, the farmers do not pay attention to the quality of the land, in terms of land and water. The quality of water and soil contained therein includes pH, temperature, and soil moisture. Good pH content for plants is between 6.0 and 8.0 but the best pH value is 7.0 with an average temperature between 27º-32º and the soil moisture is around 30%. Irrigation systems in paddy fields sometimes do not meet the water needs, so by making a well in the paddy fields, a water pump is needed to move water from the well to the rice fields. The long irrigation process with uncertain time is ineffective when the farmers have to wait for the irrigation process. So it is needed to build a system that can read and control the quality of pH and water temperature in rice fields automatically based on SMS that can be monitored from a distance. The water pump controlling and monitoring system in the paddy field area is designed to work well as expected. Since the pump can be controlled remotely by SMS. Short Message Service (SMS) based pH monitoring and pH control system works with 3 sensors and 2 water pumps, DHT11 sensor as air temperature and humidity, soil pH sensor as a reader of soil acidity, YL 69 sensor as soil moisture and water pump as well as lime water pump. The pump can be controlled manually. When the soil pH is less than 6 then the lime water pump will light up with an SMS command from the user and if the temperature is more than 35°C and the soil moisture is less than 30% then the water pump will be turned on with an SMS command from the user to do watering.
