Abstract

The development of information technology in the current digitalization era in various sectors of people's lives both in the economic sector, industry, tourism, politics and so on requires the public to be ready to accept the various kinds of developing technologies. One of the developments in information technology that is now part of the daily activities of the digital community is the exchange of information in the form of files, both photo, video, audio and other files. It is undeniable that the sending process of sending files becomes the daily routine of the community, with the number of files sent will be comparable to the need for a large storage space to store the files. Digital image compression method can minimize the image file size to be smaller, and one method of digital image is the DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) method and the Huffman method. Using digital image compression will provide a solution to reduce the image file size so that memory requirements are lower and can be maximized. The purpose of this study is to obtain the results of a comparison between the DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) method and the Huffman method for digital image compression. Both algorithms apply the Lossless Compression technique in which the results of image compression are almost the same as the original image; there is no information in the lost image but it reduces the memory size. From the research conducted with 10 test image data, it is obtained that the Huffman method produces better image quality values (PSNR), MSE better than the DWT method whereas for the compression ratio the DWT method is superior.
