Abstract
A politeness strategy is a method used by someone to convey the purpose of his/her speech more politely. Politeness strategy can be observed in every conversation between humans, including in talk shows. This study is entitled “An Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used by Chelsea Handler Found in Chelsea Netflix Talk Show in the Episode of Jackie Chan Full Interview”. The study aims to find out the types of politeness strategy and the most dominant type of politeness strategy. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative methods, where the writer uses note taking and observation techniques as a medium for data collection. This thesis answers the first question by mentioning data on politeness strategies and try to classify them based on the politeness strategies theory by Brown and Levinson. To answer the second question, the thesis calculated the presented of the accuracy of the types of politeness strategies in the talk show and decide the most dominant. There are two results in analyzing the script of Chelsea Handler Talk Show in the Episode of Jackie Chan Full Interview. First, the writer found types of positive politeness there are 5% of Strategy 1, 10% of Strategy 2, 15% of Strategy 3, 5% of Strategy 4, 10% of Strategy 5, 10% of Strategy 6, 20% of Strategy 8, 5% of Strategy 15, and types of negative politeness there are 5% of Strategy 2, 10% of Strategy 3, and 5% of Strategy 6. Second, the writer found that the most dominant type of politeness strategy is positive politeness (joke strategy).
