Abstract
The final paper analyzes illocutionary acts used by Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction movie. This study focuses on two problem. The first is to find out the types of illocutionary acts used by Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction movie. The second is the most dominant form used by Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction movie. The writer analyzed the illocutionary acts by using Searle’s theory. The final paper uses descriptive qualitative method for collecting the data, because the data itself is an utterance, uttered by Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction movie. For analyzing and categorizing the data, the writer used three methods, which are shifting, by taking notes of the utterance that contains illocutionary acts, classifying the data by categorizing the utterance using Searle’s category, and coding. The final result shows that, from the first question, the writer founds five types of illocutionary act used by Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction movie. First is representative which are uttered through claiming (44%), suggesting (7%), boasting (1%), reporting (3%), and complaining (3%). Second is directive which are uttered through commanding (11%), ordering (7%), recommending (1%), and advising (3%). Third is commissive which is uttered through promising (3%). Fourth is expressive which are uttered through pardoning (9%), blaming (4%), praising (1%), and thanking (1%). The last is declarative which are uttered through resigning (1%), and sentencing (1%). From the second question, the writer found claiming from representative is the most dominant form of illocutionary act, with 44% as final result.
