Abstract

This research studies about directive speech acts in Coraline movie. The objectives of this research are to know the kinds of directive speech acts and the forms of directive speech acts. This research is a qualitative research by employing descriptive method. The data of this research are taken from directive speech acts in the dialogues in the movie. The writer collects, analyzes, and presents the data findings of the research then draw the conclusion. The writer applied the trustworthiness of the data to obtain the valid data. The writer used three types of meaning viewed from locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. The writer also uses the Speaking Formula by Dell Hymes to explain more about the kinds of directive speech acts. Twenty data (26.31%) belong to command, fifteen data (19.73%) belong to request, twenty data (26.31%) belong to suggestion, and twenty one data (27.63%) belong to warning. So, the total amount is seventy six data. The writer found three forms of directive speech in Coraline movie. Thirty-One data (40.78%) belong to imperative. Eighteen data imperative used in command, eight in request, one in suggestion, four data in warning. Fourteen data (18.42%) belong to interrogative. Seven data interrogative used in request and seven data in suggestion. Thirty-One data (40.78%) belong to declarative. Two data declarative used in command, twelve in suggestion, and seventeen data in warning. Keyword: Speech Acts, Directive Speech Acts, Movie
