Abstract

This study analyzes the symbol of bird for hope that is portrayed in “Hope” is the Thing with Feathers. There are two problems in this study: (1) the relation of hope through bird philosophically, (2) the way of bird symbolizing hope. This study uses the objective theory of Abrams, theory of symbol, and also the descriptive analysis which focuses on certain dictions and imageries in this poem. Hope is associated to bird because of its flying ability which depicts the intercourse between the Divine and mortals so it makes bird as celestial messenger of good omen in the form of hope. Hope is the emotion that stands in the steady dwelling called the soul as bird perches in the stabile branches and voices the motivational tune like bird sings its wordless song. Hope also provides its warmness to human beings in facing any difficult days as bird insulates its feathers to survive in freezing weathers. Bird characteristics in maintaining its life is thus connected to hope as the strength to support human beings in dealing with any barriers and adversities in lifetimes. Key words: bird, hope, symbolism
