Abstract

Tourism has an important role in economy development in Indonesia. Every city in Indonesia has their own typical tourist destination. Especially in Java, it has many historical tourism. The one of historical tourist destination is Cetho Temple in Java. Cetho Temple is located in Ceto village, Gumeng, Karanganyar, Central Java. It's sited in the slope of Lawu Mountain with a height of 1.496 meters above sea level. This temple has architecture like stepped pyramid. It makes Cetho Temple has different architecture with other Hindu temples in Java. "Cetho" name is derived from where this temple is found. It's from Bahasa which means "clear" because at sunny weather we can clearly see some mountains in Jawa Tengah like Merbabu, Merapi and Lawu Mountains. It takes about 44 kilometers from Solo city to Karanganyar then follow the sign board to Tawangmangu According to history, Cetho Temple was discovered in 1842 by the Dutch; Van De Vlies. At first this temple was only in the form of stone ruins and had 14 terraces. Now this temple is seen as having 13 terraces but only 9 terraces which did restoration. In 1928 Archaeological Agency of Hindia Belanda did excavation for reconstruction and invention hidden object. Local people believe this temple was built by 5th Prabu Brawijaya. Reputedly 5th Prabu Brawijaya was built Cetho Temple for a hermitage or meditation to seek peace when he wanted to avoid the civil war in Majapahit. Cetho Temple was built at the end of the heyday of Hindu Majapahit Kingdom about 15th century. In the Cetho Temple complex there is a Sarasvati Park. The Sarasvati Goddess statue is a gift from the regent of Gianyar A. A Gde Agung Barata for Karanganyar regent Rina Iriani as a form of cooperation and bond of relationship between the Balinese Hindu and Javanese Hindu people. Sarasvati is a Goddess of knowledge. The statue of Goddess Sarasvati is magnificent with four arms standing on a Lotus flower. The Lotus petals are supported by two Hamsa (Swans) who are believed to be sacred vehicle of the Goddess. Beside of Sarasvati park there is a Sendang Pundi Sari. Some people can notice a stone at the bottom of the Spring Pond as a symbol of " Femininity ". Sendang Pundi Sari has function as a place for self-purifying and cleaning. Key Words: Temple, worship place, spring pond, Tawangmangu
