Abstract
This study uses TV Series Friends season 1 (1994) as the main data of the research. Friends is one of American TV Series that was published by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions. This study discusses two problems. The first one is to identify the type of idiom found in the TV Series Friends season 1 (1994) and the second is to analyze the idiom translating strategies applied into Indonesian. Using a qualitative method, the writer provided a detailed description about the type of idiom and translation strategies in translating English idiom found in TV series Friends season 1 in 1994. In analyzing data, the writer used Seidl and McMordie idiom classification to identify the idiom found in Friends TV Series and the writer used idiom translation strategy by Mona Baker. According to Seidl and McMordie, idiom is categorized into 9 types; keyword with idiomatic uses, idiom with nouns and adjectives, idiomatic pairs, idiom with prepositions, phrasal verbs, verbal idioms, idiom from special subjects, idiom with keyword special categories, and idiom comparison. Idiom translation strategies, according to Baker are divided into 4; similar meaning and form, similar meaning but dissimilar form, paraphrase, and omission. As the results, there are 137 data found in the TV series but the writer only analyzed 3 data samples of each idiom type and translating idiom strategy. The most used idiom found in this TV Series is phrasal verb with 45 data, followed by verbal idiom with 32 data and idiom from special subjects is not found in this TV Series. In translation aspect, similar meaning but dissimilar form is the most used idiom strategy with 60 data, followed by paraphrase strategy with 50 data. Omission strategy is least used in translating idiom with only 6 data. Keywords: Idiom, Translation, Friends Season 1, TV Series
