Abstract

This final paper is about the usage suffix -ation in English. This research is a transformasional study of which the main aims are to analyze the forms of suffix –ation in the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth and identify the meaning of suffix –ation in the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth. In this final paper, the writer tries to explore theories on morphology, word formation, affixation and the novel that the data of suffix –ation from. This final paper is qualitative research. Data that will be analyzed in this final paper are all words with suffix -ation and its variation in Veronica Roth’s Divergent. The writer uses the document technique because most of data are taken from the texts. After collecting the sentences that have suffix -ation and its variation as the whole, the writer tries to analyze them. The sentence that have root words with suffix -ation and its variation are classified based on the form and the meanings. Based on the analysis, there are three forms that the writer found in Veronica Roth’s Divergent. They are -ation, -ion and -ition. The main meaning of suffix -ation and its variation in English: 1) the action of, 2) the process of, 3) the result of, 4) the object of, 5) the state of being. Suffix -ation structure in English morphology: X + ation → Xation, except for the verb/adjective ended with -ate and -ine, the final syllable of -ate and -ine is omitted when it is attached to suffix ation, the structure is Xate + ation → Xateation → Xation and Xine + ation → Xineation → Xation.
