Abstract
This final paper entitled A Study of English Suffix –ous in the novel The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy is aimed at finding out the structure and meaning of suffix -ous in a word. This study belongs to a qualitative research because the data were in the form of the text and the data were not analyzed by using any statistical procedure. The data were taken from a novel entitled The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy. The data were collected from reading novel, searching and underlining the suffixe -ous, and putting them in file. The data were analyzed by the procedure of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification (Miles and Huberman, 1994: 170-175). The findings of the paper show that the word ended in suffix –ous has several forms such as X + ous = Xous, Xn + ous = Xous, Xnm + ous = Xous, Xe + I + ous = Xous and X+a+ous = Xous, and the meanings of words ended in ous are very, full of or having, resembling, and causing.
