Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze Ma’s personality after suffering such conflicts and domestic violence as reflected in Room novel by Emma Donoghue. There are three problem analyzed in this study: (1) Conflicts experienced by Ma as reflected in Room novel, (2) Issue of domestic violence experienced by Ma, (3) Psychoanalysis study of Ma’s personality after suffering such conflicts and domestic violence. The writer uses Koesnosebroto’s theory about conflict to analyze the first problem, theory of McCue and Hanson about domestic violence to analyze the second problem, and Sigmund Freud’s theory about personality to analyze the third problem statements. The data was analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method which focuses on the analysis of textual data. The data were collected by reading the novel repeatedly, reading some related references to observe the theory, taking notes of important data, arranging the data, classifying the important data, and drawing the conclusion. The analyses of this research result in some findings. The first point is the conflicts experienced by Ma are mostly external conflicts and the other conflicts are internal conflicts. The second is some conflicts experienced by Ma are categorized as domestic violence that is caused by Old Nick’s behavior. The third point is the psychoanalysis study of Ma’s personality after suffering the conflicts and domestic violence. The analysis and findings of this research show that Ma’s id to commit suicide tends to be dominant than the other personality system like ego and superego.
