Abstract

This final paper is about the effects of materialism on human behaviour in Persuasion novel viewed from Bible. This research focuses on analysis of materialism viewed from a novel by Jane Austen entitled Persuasion and also the holy book of Christian religion, Bible. This research uses mimetic approach in which the main aims of the writer by doing this research is to 1) understand about materialism in society 2) know about what should society do in facing materialism according to Bible 3) find the differences between materialism concept in Persuasion and Bible. This research is based on mimetic approach which focuses on the correlation between the work by Jane Austen entitled Persuasion and the holy Bible. The reason why the writer is using Bible is because of the base of Jane Austen‘s work itself, Christianity. The materials of this research are a novel and Bible. The writer uses library research to collect the data but because the writer is a Moslem, besides finding data from the library and internet, the writer also asked for informations about Christianity related to this topic from her Christian friends for her better understanding. The result of this research is that materialism in Persuasion is never been agreed in Bible. It is totally different between both of them. Materialism can be seen in such characters/attitudes. After analyzing this research, the writer found that all the materialism-affected attitudes are not allowed and categorized as a sin in Christianity.
