Abstract
This graduating paper entitled A Study of English Prefix un- in the Novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling belongs to a qualitative research because the data are taken in the form of words and the data are not analyzed by using any statistical procedure. The writer used the documentation technique because the data were taken from a text. He analyzed the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling. The writer read the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling. Then, he underlined the words using prefix un-, and he wrote down the words using prefix un-, and put them in a file. The writer analyzed data in three steps, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. He focused on the prefix un-. He made some tables and put the data into classification based on the functions and forms to answer the questions in the problem formulation. Next, he drew a conclusion. The result of this study shows that there are four functions of prefix un- such as to negatiate verbs, adjectives, nouns and adverbs. The forms of prefix un- can be in the form of un + X = unX, un + X + ed = unXed,un + X + able = unXable, un + X + ful= unXful, un + X + ing = unXing, un + X + ly= unXly. _______________________________________________________________ Key words: prefix, un, form, function, novel
