Abstract

This graduating paper entitled A Study of English Suffix –ly in the Novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan belongs to a qualitative research because the data are in the form of words and the data are not analyzed by using any statistical procedure. The writer used the documentation technique because the data were taken from a text. She analyzed the novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The writer read the novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Then, she underlined the words ending in suffix –ly, and she wrote down the words ending in suffix –ly, and put them in a file. The writer analyzed data in three steps; data reduction, data display, and conclusion. She focused on the suffix –ly. She made a table and put the data into the table to answer the questions in the problem formulation. Next, she drew a conclusion. The result of this study shows that the structure of suffix –ly can be in the form of x + ly = xly, x + ly = xlly, x + ly = xily, x + ly = x + consonant + ly, and x + ly = xically. The meaning of suffix –ly can be as the way to do, from the stated point of view, having the characteristics of/ like (the noun), and recurring at interval of. __________________________________________________________________ Key words: suffix, ly, form, meaning, novel.
