Abstract

This final paper aims at identifying and describing the types and the causes of errors in understanding grammar English made by the second-semester students of University of Technology Yogyakarta. This research was conducted at Integrated English Class in the academic year 2020/2021. The research respondents consisted of 36 students. The study was a qualitative research. Method and data collecting technique were proceded in identifying, analyzing, and evaluating data. This research object focuses on the use of the auxilliary verbs ‘to be, to do, to have’. The data were analyzed using the error analysis approach. The results of this research showed that there were four types of error on understanding grammar which consist of misuse, omission, redundant repetition, and unnecessary addition, and that there exist three causes of errors that were grouped into three categories of sub-causes of students’ error on understanding grammar. Keywords: Error Analysis,Understanding, Grammar, Error, Types, Causes Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mendiskripsikan jenis serta penyebab kesalahan pemahaman grammar yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa semester dua Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada mata kuliah ‘Integrated English’ tahun ajaran 2020/2021. Partisipan terdiri dari 36 siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode qualitative dan tehnik kolektif data. Berdasarkan identifikasi, analisis, dan evaluasi data. Penelitian ini terfokus pada penggunaan kata kerja bantu ‘to be, to do, to have’. Analisis data menggunakan pendekatan analisis kesalahan siswa. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan ada empat tipe kesalahan dan tiga penyebab kesalahan yang terbagi menjadi tiga sub-kategori penyebab kesalahan pada pemahaman struktur tata bahasa.
