Abstract
This study analyses the idea of nihilism reflected by character Gaear in the movie Fargo (1996). This study aims to discuss two problems. The first is to know how the character Gaear can be considered a nihilist. It is the main focus of this study. The second is to know why the Coen brothers make Gaear a nihilist from their perspective. This study is library research. It means that the data is gathered from some books. The study makes use of psychoanalytical theory for the first problem and expressive theory for the second problem. In this study, the researcher finds that Gaear is a nihilist, proven by his behavior throughout different scenes in the movie. By using the Psychoanalytical theory, it is clear that Gaear personality is abnormal. In the second problem, the director takes from the real-life place and event to make Gaear character have nihilism philosophy. Keywords: Coen brothers, Fargo, Gaear, Nihilism, Psychoanalytical theory Penelitian ini membahas tentang unsur nihilisme yang direfleksikan oleh karakter Gaear dalam film Fargo (1996). Penelitian ini membahas dua masalah pokok. Pertama untuk mengetahui bagaimana karakter Gaear bisa dikategorikan sebagai seorang yang nihilis. Hal tersebut akan menjadi bahasan pokok masalah pada penelitian ini. Kedua, untuk mengetahui alasan Coen bersaudara menjadikan Gaear sebagai seorang nihilis dari sudut pandang mereka. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kepustakaan. Artinya, data dikumpulkan dari beberapa buku. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori psikoanalitik untuk masalah pertama dan teori ekspresif untuk masalah kedua. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan bahwa Gaear adalah seorang nihilis yang dibuktikan dari perilakunya dari berbagai adegan dalam film. Dengan menggunakan teori psikoanalisis, jelas bahwa keadaan pikiran Gaear tidaklah normal. Dalam masalah kedua sutradara mengambil inspirasi tempat dan peristiwa dari kehidupan nyata untuk membuat karakter Gaear memiliki filosofi nihilisme.
