Abstract
This study is entitled “An Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used by Oprah Winfrey in Barack Obama and Michelle” episode. The study aims to find out categories of politeness strategy and the most dominant categories of politeness strategy. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative methods. The writer uses note-taking and observation techniques as a medium for data collection. This thesis answers the first question by mentioning data on politeness strategies and classifying them based on the politeness strategies theory by Brown and Levinson. To answer the second question, the thesis calculated the present accuracy of the categories of politeness strategies in the talk show and decided the most dominant. There are two results in analyzing the Oprah Winfrey script. First, the writer found types of positive politeness which are 5 % of Strategy 1: Notice, attend to the hearer, 5% of Strategy 2: Exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with the hearer), 15% of Strategy 3: Intensify to the hearer, 60% of Strategy 5: Seek Agreement, 10% of Strategy 6: Avoid Disagreement, and 5% of Strategy 11: Be Optimistic. Second, the dominant type of politeness strategy found in Oprah Talk Show in the episode of Barack Obama and Michelle uploaded on YouTube on 8th January 2013 is Strategy 5: Seek Agreement of positive politeness strategy. Keywords: Brown and Levinson, Politeness Strategies Penelitian ini berjudul “Analisis Strategi Kesopanan yang Digunakan Oprah Winfrey dalam Episode Barack Obama dan Michelle”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kategori strategi kesantunan dan kategori strategi kesantunan yang paling dominan. Skripsi ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, penulis menggunakan teknik catat dan observasi sebagai media pengumpulan data. Tesis ini menjawab pertanyaan pertama dengan menyebutkan data tentang strategi kesantunan dan mencoba mengklasifikasikannya berdasarkan teori strategi kesantunan Brown dan Levinson. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan kedua, tesis menghitung penyajian ketepatan kategori strategi kesantunan dalam talk show dan menentukan yang paling dominan. Ada dua hasil dalam menganalisis naskah naskah Oprah Winfrey. Pertama, penulis menemukan jenis kesantunan positif ada 5% Strategi 1: Memperhatikan, memperhatikan pendengar, 5% Strategi 2: Melebih-lebihkan (minat, persetujuan, simpati dengan pendengar), 15% Strategi 3: Mengintensifkan pendengar , 60% dari Strategi 5: Carilah Kesepakatan, 10% dari Strategi 6: Hindari Ketidaksepakatan, dan 5% dari Strategi 11: Bersikap Optimis. Kedua, jenis strategi kesantunan yang dominan ditemukan dalam Oprah Talk Show dalam episode Barack Obama dan Michelle yang diunggah di YouTube pada tanggal 8 Januari 2013 adalah Strategi 5: Carilah Persetujuan dari strategi kesantunan positif.
