Abstract
This study discusses the suffixes, especially the adjectival suffixes in the novel "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. The researcher is interested in knowing more about suffixes in English. This study aims to identify the types of adjectival suffixes and to know the most dominant adjectival suffix found in the novel "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. The method used in this study is the qualitative method. The object of this study is words that use adjectival suffixes found in the novel "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. Base words can be nouns, verbs, and adjectives and then turn into adjectives after adding the suffix. The result of this study shows that there were twelve forms of adjectival suffixes used in "The Hate U Give" novel such as 'suffix able, 'suffix-ful,' 'suffix-ic', 'suffix-ish', 'suffix-ive', 'suffix-ous', 'suffix-ible', 'suffix-ing', 'suffix-less', 'suffix-y', 'suffix-ed', and 'suffix-ly'. Based on the findings, 'suffix-y' is the most dominant adjectival suffix in "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. The function of adjectival suffixes is to modify the meaning of the base word. The base word will change the word class into an adjective after the suffix is added. Keywords: adjective, adjectival suffix, base word, suffix Penelitian ini membahas tentang akhiran khususnya akhiran yang membentuk kata sifat dalam novel “The Hate U Give” oleh Angie Thomas. Penulis tertarik untuk lebih tahu tentang akhiran dalam bahasa Inggris. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis akhiran yang membentuk kata sifat dan mengetahui akhiran yang sering digunakan pada novel “The Hate U Give” oleh Angie Thomas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Objek penelitian ini adalah kata yang menggunakan akhiran yang membentuk kata sifat yang terdapat dalam novel. Kata dasar bisa berupa kata benda, kata kerja, dan kata sifat, kemudian akan berubah menjadi kata sifat setelah ditambahkan akhiran. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terdapat dua belas jenis akhiran yang membentuk kata sifat yang digunakan di dalam novel “The Hate U Give” yaitu, ‘suffix-able’, ‘suffix-ful’, ‘suffix-ic’, ‘suffix-ish’, ‘suffix-ive’, ‘suffix-ous’, ‘suffix-ible’, ‘suffix-ing’, ‘suffix-less’, ‘suffix-y’, ‘suffix-ed’, and ‘suffix-ly’. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ‘suffix-y’ merupakan jenis akhiran yang membentuk kata sifat yang paling sering digunakan. Fungsi akhiran yang membentuk kata sifat adalah untuk memodifikasi arti dari kata dasar. Kata dasar akan mengalami perubahan kelas kata menjadi kata sifat setelah akhiran ditambahkan.
