Abstract

This study concerns No Place To Hide, a book by Robert O’Harrow. The writer is interested in the book because she wants to dig up certain paradoxical reality in United States particularly in a surveillance society. This study discusses two problems. The first problem is to find out the reasons why liberal societies are not free anymore. The second is to explain some of freedoms that are not obtained by the societies. The method of research applied in this study is library research. It means that the data were gathered from some books which might be helpful. The writer uses qualitative research. The theory used in this research is theory of surveillance by Roger Clarke and some kinds of surveillance theory explained by Slobogin such as physical, communicational, and transactional surveillance. The findings of this research are the reasons why the liberal societies are not free as we thought and there are two kinds of freedoms that are not obtained by the societies. The writer finds that the societies are not free completely because they live in a surveillance society where the government and some private companies monitor them through physical, communicational, and transactional surveillance. The writer also finds that because of that supervision, the society do not obtain freedom from fear and freedom of discrimination. Keywords: Surveillance Society, liberals, freedom
