Abstract

A narrative text should have a generic structure and language feature. Simple past tense is a language feature of the text. In writing an English narrative text, students commonly make errors related to the use of simple past tense. Therefore, this research aims to discover students’ types of errors in writing narrative text using simple past and to determine students’ dominant errors in writing narrative text using the simple past tense. The design of this research is a mixed-method. The respondents are third-semester students, 26 students, of the English Language Department of the Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta in the academic year 2021/2022. Research data were documents, students’ narrative text writing-related Cross-Cultural Understanding, taken from the subject’s lecturer. Data were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of this research show that students made four types of errors: omission, addition, mis formation, and misordering, in writing narrative text using the simple past tense. This research reveals 316 students’ error in writing narrative text using the simple past tense. Misformation was the most dominant error with 275 errors (87%), followed by addition with 22 errors (7%), omission with 13 errors (4%), and mis ordering with 6 errors (2%). This research has small scope research; it is limited to the analysis of third-semester students’ errors in writing narrative text using simple past tense at Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta. Therefore, further researchers are expected to conduct research with wide-scope research, such as Indonesian students using a different research design, e.g. experimental research on the effective technique used to decrease students’ errors in writing narrative text using the simple past tense. Simple past tense merupakan salah satu fitur bahasa teks tersebut. Dalam menulis teks naratif bahasa Inggris, siswa biasanya membuat kesalahan terkait dengan penggunaan simple past tense. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis kesalahan siswa dalam menulis teks naratif menggunakan simple past tense dan untuk menentukan kesalahan dominan siswa dalam menulis teks naratif menggunakan simple past tense. Desain penelitian ini adalah mixed-method. Respondennya adalah mahasiswa semester tiga, 26 mahasiswa, Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta tahun ajaran 2021/2022. Data penelitian berupa dokumen, yaitu tulisan teks naratif mahasiswa terkait mata kuliah Cross-Cultural Understanding, yang diperoleh dari dosen mata kuliah tersebut. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa membuat empat jenis kesalahan: penghilangan, penambahan, salah formasi, dan salah susunan, dalam menulis teks naratif menggunakan simple past tense. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 316 kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa dalam menulis teks naratif menggunakan simple past tense. Kesalahan formasi merupakan kesalahan yang paling dominan dengan 275 kesalahan (87%), diikuti oleh penambahan sebanyak 22 kesalahan (7%), penghilangan dengan 13 kesalahan (4%), dan kesalahan susunan dengan 6 kesalahan (2%). Penelitian ini memiliki lingkup penelitian yang sempit, hanya terbatas pada analisis kesalahan mahasiswa semester tiga dalam menulis teks naratif menggunakan simple past tense di Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta. Oleh karena itu, peneliti selanjutnya diharapkan dapat melakukan penelitian dengan cakupan penelitian yang lebih luas, seperti mahasiswa Indonesia yang menggunakan desain penelitian yang berbeda, misalnya penelitian eksperimental tentang teknik yang efektif digunakan untuk mengurangi kesalahan siswa dalam menulis teks naratif menggunakan simple past tense.
