Abstract

This study entitled “An Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used in The Dialogue of Darkest Hour Movie” is aimed to find out the kinds of positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and the factors influencing the characters to employ those strategies according to Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategy. This study belongs to a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study are taken from the conversation uttered by the characters in the movie. The study result shows that there are 2 types of politeness strategy. It consists of 90 data of positive politeness strategy and 30 data of negative politeness strategy. Two main factors influence the characters to employ certain strategies, namely payoff and relevant circumstances. The payoff is fulfilled when the speaker gets advantages by doing politeness strategies. Meanwhile, the relevant circumstances include social distance (D), relative power (P), ranking of imposition (R).
