Abstract

This study discusses the strategy of impoliteness in the Euphoria drama series season 1. This drama raises a story about the experiences of high school students in the story of their personalities, trauma, sex life, drug addiction, friendship, and love for family. This study aims to find out the types and functions of impoliteness strategies used by the drama's characters. This study uses a qualitative method. The data source is the dialogues used by the characters in the drama. In analyzing the data, Culpeper's theory describes the various impoliteness strategies used by the characters in the drama. The results showed that there were 39 dialogues data categorized into five types: bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. Meanwhile, there are three functions of impoliteness: affective impoliteness, coercive impoliteness, and entertainment impoliteness. These findings indicate that the characters in the Euphoria drama series season 1 use a lot of sentences that contain impoliteness and are very sensitive to being watched by teenagers.
