Abstract
This study discusses Afro-American Vernacular English in the song lyrics of Bruno Mars. Song lyrics written and sung by Bruno Mars are about the journey of his life, career, friendship, love, heartbreak, boredom, and hedonism. The two primary purposes of this study are to find out about the use of AAVE features and the most frequently used AAVE features in the song lyrics of Bruno Mars. This study uses a qualitative method. The data source is the song lyrics of Bruno Mars in his album from 2010 until 2022. In elaborating the data, the theory proposed by Wardhaugh and Wolfram is used to define AAVE features used in the song lyrics of Bruno Mars. To find the results of this study, the writer read the lyrics, took notes, coded the data, analyzed it, and drew inferences. It resulted in 116 data (42%) of stigmatized phonological features, 22 data (9%) of no signaling of the third-person singular present tense, 54 data (22%) of zero copulae, 32 data (13%) of negatives (ain’t), 14 data (6%) of double negation, 10 data (4%) of auxiliary verb done & been, and 3 data (0.2%) habitual be from 251 data have been analyzed in total. At the same time, the most frequently used AAVE feature is stigmatized phonological features. Those findings show that Bruno Mars uses bags of song lyrics that contain AAVE features and are interesting to read and listen to.
