Abstract

This final paper study analyzes the identity crisis in the Edge of Seventeen movie (1998). Identity crisis is the failure to achieve ego identity during adolescence, also called inner conflict. The objectives of this final paper are to find out the identity crisis experienced by Eric Hunter, the causes of the identity crisis, and the resolutions of the identity crisis. The theory used to analyze is Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development stage five identity vs role confusion which is supported by Desmita’s theory about someone who acquired their identity. This final paper used the qualitative method because the data was analyzed qualitatively. The data were collected by watching the movie repeatedly, reading some references, taking notes of the essential things, analyzing and classifying, and making a conclusion. Based on the analysis, there are three results. The result shows that (1) Eric Hunter experienced an identity crisis, such as being indecisive about his sexual orientation, being rebellious, and imitating the style and behavior of others, and (2) Eric Hunter experienced identity crisis because of some causes, such as his adolescence period and also his environments, and (3) Here are some resolutions from Eric Hunter’s identity crisis, such as he digs deeper and learns into himself deeply, he reveals who he is, and he still focuses on his future goals.
