Abstract

This study is conducted to explain the depiction of materialism by the main character in the novel The Great Gatsby. The main focus of this research is the main character Jay Gatsby who describes the state of materialism. Jay Gatsby's materialism creates some effects that impact his life after his death. There are two problems in this study. The first problem is how materialism is depicted in Jay Gatsby's character. The second problem is how materialism affects Jay Gatsby. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to explain the data in the form of words and sentences. The study's data comes from books, journals, and articles, so the researcher uses library research to conduct this study. This study uses the theory of materialism in Marxism as the main theory by Karl Marx. Jay Gatsby has five depictions of materialism: ambitious, dominating, using wealth for luxury, showing off status, and materialism as everything. Those five depictions of materialism create four effects on Jay Gatsby: extravagant spending money, not getting trust from his cycle, getting rumours from society, and not having real friends.
