Abstract

This paper is about how to apply the theory of psychoanalysis to the main character. The type of research in this paper is qualitative research using the Psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud. The objectives of this study are: 1) How the Id, Superego, and Ego are depicted in Theodore Finch's character? 2) How is Finch's character using the defense mechanisms portrayed in this movie? And 3) What did Theodore Finch do to overcome the anxiety that happened to him? The results of this study show the depiction of Finch’s Id when he cannot control himself and became aggressive. Superego depictions of Finch appear as he tried to do activities to keep him awake and conscious. The depiction of Finch’s Ego emerges as he tried to help Violet overcome her nervousness and trauma. The self-defense mechanism that Finch used when he can not fulfill his desires are Rationalization, Displacement, Sublimation, Denial, Reaction Formation, and Repression. Finch also engages in other activities or things to help him cope with his anxiousness.
