Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the psychosocial development of the main character in Charles Dicken’s David Copperfield. There are two problems in this research. The first problem is what the influential figures do to affect the main character’s Psychosocial Development. The second problem is how the main character deals with the problems which appear in every stage of Psychosocial Development. This research uses Objective theory by Abrams and Psychosocial Development by Erik Erikson to help the writer learn the subject. The data uses qualitative research which is obtained by reading the novel repeatedly and reading some references related to theories. The analysis of this study finds the psychosocial development of David Copperfield is affected by influential figures throughout the eight stages of Psychosocial Development. These influential figures do positive and negative acts toward David which leads him to problems. David can deal with problems that appear in five stages of Psychosocial Development, but he fails in dealing with those problems in three other stages. The author also finds the outcomes of psychosocial development. David receives five psychosocial strengths which are trust, initiative, industry, intimacy, generativity, and integrity as the positive outcomes. He also receives three psychosocial weaknesses which are shame and doubt, guilt, and confusion as the negative outcomes of psychosocial development. ____________________________________________________________________ Keywords: psychosocial development, the main character, positive and negative actions, positive and negative outcome
