Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the ways transactional marriage is done by the female characters of Jane Austen’s novel entitled Mansfield Park. The study is a descriptive qualitative research. The primary source of the study is the novel and the secondary sources are articles from journals, the Internet, and some reference books. In conducting the research, the writer is helped by the Objective Theory proposed by M.H. Abrams and Social Exchange Theory which is suggested by John W. Thibaut. In getting the data, the writer read the novel closely and through the plot, characterization, and setting, she searched for the data which show the ways transactional marriage is done. The study comes to a finding that several characters, especially female characters, carry out marriage transactions by involving 1) marriage marketplace, and 2) institutional marriage games. Keywords: marriage institutional games, marriage marketplace, transactional marriage
