Abstract
Manipulative behaviour is a psychological diagnosis that can result in a negative form. This behaviour occurs everywhere daily in society. Manipulative behaviour can be seen as behaviour that tends to control others to achieve something from the manipulator. This study aims at analysing the 10th novel of Sweet Valley High entitled Wrong Kind of Girl by Francine Pascal on manipulative behaviour exhibited by Jessica Wakefield. This descriptive qualitative study examines the types, causes, and impacts of manipulative behaviour committed by Jessica by matching the data gathered from the novel. This study implements the concept from Len Bowers on the types of manipulative behaviour which include bullying, conning, capitalizing, corrupting, dividing and conditioning. The result of this study is firstly, it found five types of manipulative behaviour exhibited by Jessica which are bullying, corrupting, conditioning, conning and dividing. Secondly, two factors that caused Jessica to commit manipulative behaviour are opportunity and desire goals. Finally, this study found the impacts of manipulative behaviour toward Jessica implementing Leon Festinger’s theory of Cognitive dissonance which resulted in her feeling of regret and apology.
