Abstract

Attitude is the awareness of one's actions. Each individual's attitude varies depending on how she adjust to the situation. In the novel EMMA by Jane Austen, several women characters are depicted with different attitudes. The study aims to analysis in each women's character toward love. Therefore this study has three objectives: the first objective is to identify the factors that underlie women's attitudes toward love in Jane Austen's EMMA, the second objective aims to identify Emma's attitude toward love, and the third aims to identify the difference in Emma's attitude toward other women characters. This study uses descriptive qualitative; the writer uses objective theory and conducts library research. This study found three factors underlying women's attitudes toward love from the point of view of social status in society, stereotypes from society, and life goals. The existence of strata in life influences a woman's attitude towards love, which makes this difference even more influential because the upper strata have more power in society. In the findings, Emma's attitude toward love is influenced by the behavior of judging and underestimating other people. Also, she is very ambitious to get perfection of love. The things that influenced Emma's attitude made her lose herself and had an impact on the people around her. The study also found differences between the attitudes of Emma, Mrs. Weston, Harriet Smith, and Jane Fairfax. The four women characters have different characters and backgrounds, making them have different perspectives on love.
