Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find metaphors contained in the characters and supporting characters listed in the novel The Old Man and The Sea. In this paper, the writer provides two problem statements, which are what metaphors are found in the novel and what the signify of these metaphors are. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method that uses the novel as its main research source. The writer also uses metaphor theory with an objective approach in the study. The use of data collection is also used to examine the metaphors contained in the characters and supporting characters listed in each paragraph and dialog in the novel. The writer explains the data that has been collected and then relates it to the theory of metaphor from Larson, Ullman, Lakof and Jhanson. From the research that has been conducted, there are three types of metaphors that the author found in this study. They are anthropomorphic, structural conceptual metaphor, and non-conventional metaphor. The writer finds in his research that the non-conventional metaphor is the more dominant type of metaphor that appears in his research. There are three supporting characters and one dictionary that uses non-conventional metaphors. There are "fishless desert, Seabird, Manolin, and Old Shack
