Abstract

This study aims to study the Cholly’s character development in Toni Morrison’s novel entitled The Bluest Eye. The writer proposes three questions in his study: 1) How is Cholly characterized in the novel, 2) How are Cholly’s characters developed, and 3) What are the factors that have made Cholly’s characters develop. The study is considered a descriptive qualitative research. The novel is used by the writer as the main source of research data. In getting the data, the wrtier examines Cholly’s actions and attitudes as represented in the intrinsic aspects of the novel, such as characterization, plot, and setting. Therefore, the writer needs Abrams’ Objective Theory to help him interpret and analyze the data that he has collected. The writer found in his study that although Cholly is the side character in the story, he is a dominant one. He is a dynamic character whose characters develop from being good to be bad. Cholly is depicted as a good and innocent boy in his childhood life but when he is adult he becomes a bad and immoral person. He turns to be a man who is: a) Heartless, b) Selfish, c) Irresponsible. The study also found two factors that play a significant role in Cholly’s character development. Those factors are: a) The influence of people in his surrounding and b) Frustrating feeling
