Abstract
This research aims to address two main issues. The first problem is to explore the identity changes of main character Stella. The second problem is to investigate the internal and external factors influencing Stella's identit change. This research employs a qualitative method focusing on the context of the narrative and dialogue in the novel The Vanishing Half. Data was collected by repeatedly reading the novel and searching for additional data from the internet, such as journals and other literary books. The results of this research indicate that Stella's identity transformation involves a shift in her social identity through racial passing. Additionally, Stella's cultural identity transformation includes aspects such as appearance, speech style, and manners. The causes of Stella's identity transformation are attributed to internal factors, including dissatisfaction with her original identity and traumatic experiences, as well as external factors such as economic pressure. This research provides insight into how individuals can experience complex and multi-dimensional identity changes in their efforts to overcome marginalization and achieve a better life. By analyzing Stella's life journey, this study also highlights the social and racial dynamics influencing individual choices within a broader context. This research shows that a person's identity can be greatly influenced by external and internal factors and that identity change can be a survival strategy in a discriminatory social context. Stella, through her identity change, achieved her goals but at great emotional and moral cost, highlighting the complexity and consequences of the choice to change social and cultural identity
