Abstract

This research examines the conversational maxims in the classification of illocutionary acts and speech acts performed in The French Dispatch (2021) movie. Using Austin's theory for classifying illocutionary acts, Grice's conversational maxims, and Yule's speech act theory, the researcher employs a descriptive qualitative method of observation, transcription, and note-taking for data collection. The findings reveal a classification of illocutionary acts that obey conversational maxims with speech acts performed. In verdictives, 16 direct speech act and 3 indirect speech act cover the maxim of quantity and manner. Exercitives include 65 direct speech acts and 8 indirect speech acts. Commissives have 31 direct speech act data and 4 indirect speech acts. In behabitives contain 22 direct speech acts, including maxim of quality, relevance, and manner, and 3 indirect speech acts, including maxim of quality and relevance. The expositives have 76 direct speech acts on all maxims and 6 indirect speech acts on the maxim of quantity, quality, and relevance.
