Abstract

This qualitative study applies J.L. Austin's Speech Act Theory to scrutinize Chris Rock's performance in the "Selective Outrage" stand-up comedy show. The analysis focuses on identifying the existence of speech acts (locutionary, illocutionary, perlocutionary) and determining the dominant illocutionary acts utilized by Rock. Furthermore, this research study uses qualitative methods with observation and note-taking as data collection techniques. The combination of note-taking and observation techniques in analyzing speech acts in Chris Rock's ‘Selective Outrage’ explains the use of various types of nuanced and deliberate speech acts throughout the performance. The data is presented using macro analysis which results in three levels: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Through meticulous examination, the study categorizes illocutionary acts into declarative, representative, expressive, directive, and commissive, with detailed explanations provided for each category. Furthermore, the findings reveal the prevalence of various speech acts within Rock's comedic discourse, shedding light on the nuanced ways in which he engages with his audience. Representative speech acts emerge as the most prominent, comprising 44% of the analyzed data, followed by expressive acts at 35%. Declarative statements constitute 12%, while directives and commissive acts make up 7% and 2%, respectively. This qualitative analysis offers valuable insights into the nature of speech acts in stand-up comedy and provides a deeper understanding of Rock's comedic style and communicative strategies.
