Abstract
The transformation of Arthas Menethil from a noble hero to a villain in Christie Golden's novel Arthas: Rise of the Lich King is a complex narrative that explores themes of ambition, power, and moral decay. This study aims to analyze the internal and external factors influencing Arthas's character evolution and the subsequent impact on his morality and relationships. Utilizing Joseph Campbell's character development theory and The Hero's Journey structure, this research examines the psychological and emotional aspects contributing to Arthas's downfall. The findings reveal that Arthas's internal conflicts, traumatic experiences, and external manipulations by the Lich King and Frostmourne are pivotal in his transformation. The study concludes that Arthas's journey is a poignant example of how a hero's path can be corrupted, leading to profound changes in values and priorities, and ultimately resulting in his tragic demise. This research contributes to the academic discourse on literary character development.
